Centrifugal Oil Filter
A centrifugal oil filter (secondary oil filter) is a device used on engines and industrial equipment (kidney loop system) to remove solid particle contaminants from oil without the need for replaceable filter elements. Centrifugal filters operate in bypass and process approximately 10% of the lubricating oil before returning it to the engine’s sump. Unlike conventional filters that rely on porous media, centrifugal filters use high-speed rotation (spinner) to separate solid impurities from the oil through centrifugal force (g-force). Centrifugal oil filters efficiently capture fine particles, extending oil life, reducing maintenance costs, and improving engine reliability and performance.
Centrifugal Oil Filters: Cleaner Oil, Longer Oil Life, Lower Oil Costs
Centrifugal filters (offline oil filtration) are commonly used in heavy-duty engines, marine, power generation, natural gas compression, mining, and industrial applications, where oil cleanliness is critical. Their ability to remove microscopic particles, sludge, soot, and other solid contaminants makes them ideal for environments with high levels of contamination. By continuously cleaning the oil, these oil centrifuges help maintain optimal lubrication, reduce engine wear, and enhance fuel efficiency. This lowers maintenance costs and minimizes environmental impact by reducing the frequency of oil changes.

Spinner II
The Spinner II Products Division is the sole North American importer and distributor of oil cleaning centrifuges manufactured by Glacier Metal Company (now Mann Hummel). Later, Spinner II became a division of T.F. Hudgins, Inc. In 2016, T.F. Hudgins merged with Allied Reliability, Inc. Spinner II oil cleaning centrifuges, produced by Mann Hummel, use centrifugal force to separate contaminants from the oil. Depending on the application, Spinner II provides a cleanable rotor or a single-use disposable rotor.
A better engine oil filtration system is the answer!
While the centrifugal oil filters may look similar, the IOW Group’s centrifugal oil cleaners technology is patent-protected. Not only is the IOW Group’s offline filtration system technology one of a kind, but the IOW centrifugal oil filters are 150% more efficient than Mann Hummel centrifugal oil cleaners, Glacier centrifuges, Spinner II oil cleaning centrifuges, Mircospin centrifuges, or any currently available centrifuge.
Leading engine brands trust these centrifugal oil filters, including Caterpillar, INNIO Waukesha, Hyundai HiMSEN, Jenbacher, MAN Energy Solution, Progress Rail EMD, and Perkins Engines. BUT, not all centrifugal filters are created equal. IOW Group has designed, patented, and manufactured the world’s highest-performing and only self-monitoring bypass oil filtration spinner-type separator. Hydraulic Oil Filtration Systems
For marine applications, since more than 90% of hydraulic system failures onboard vessels are due to water or fine contaminant particles in the hydraulic oil, it makes sense to maintain the hydraulic oil rather than the equipment. Water contamination in onboard hydraulic systems is due to leaking seals in systems that come into contact with seawater, such as trustees, stabilizers, propellers, etc.; it is a recognized problem. Fine contaminated particles can come from various sources, such as depleted additives, coatings from tank walls, or metal from normal machinery wear. Better hydraulic oil cleaning is the answer!

What is a bypass filtration?
Bypass filtration (also called offline oil filtration) is a system in which a portion of the oil flow is filtered to a much higher degree than in a full-flow filtration system before returning to the oil sump. A bypass filter is sometimes referred to as a secondary filter. Bypass filters working in a separate circuit do not supply the engine with clean oil directly. A bypass filter improves oil cleanliness.
A bypass filter is usually a much finer solid-particle filter that captures smaller solid particles than the full-flow filtration system. Because it has higher filtration efficiency, it will have a much lower flow rate than a full-flow filter, particularly when the oil is cold. A bypass filtration system is designed to improve the overall cleanliness of the oil without compromising the equipment’s/engine’s flow rate. Bypass filtration systems are excellent solutions for removing solid particles.
Do you need to separate solids from your lube oil? The high centrifugal driving force of the IOW Group centrifugal bypass oil filter is an excellent solution for separating suspended solids (soot, sludge, dirt, wear metals, or other solid contaminants) from lube oils, gear oils, or hydraulic oils. Gravitational force is replaced with centrifugal force. IOW Group bypass filtration centrifuges do not require a filter medium. The IOW Group bypass oil centrifuge utilizes bowl discs to increase separation surface area.
What is a combination filtration?
Combination filtration uses both full-flow filtration and bypass technology. A combination filter is sometimes referred to as a two-stage filter.
The best oil filtration method combines the full-flow oil filters and centrifugal bypass oil filtration. To learn more about a better oil filtration process, visit our Bypass Oil Filtration is the answer! blog.
What is a full flow filtration?
Full-flow filtration is when all of the oil pump output is filtered before reaching the engine. The full-flow filter provides essential engine protection. The full-flow filter must have sufficient dirt-holding capacity to capture and retain harmful contaminants, enabling the required service and maintenance intervals.
A better oil filter will aid in cleaner oils. To learn more about improving your filtration process (filter aid), visit our Full-flow Oil Filter — a one-system approach is not enough! blog.
What is a hydraulic oil filtration system?
A hydraulic oil filtration system supports long-term equipment operation by reducing the risk of oil-related failures or unscheduled maintenance caused by contaminated hydraulic oil. Controlling and removing undesired contamination is a factor in hydraulic oil reliability. When contamination invades oil, the protection of the rotating components is placed at risk, and equipment performance is jeopardized.

What is a vacuum distillation system for industrial oils?
A vacuum dehydration system uses the vacuum dehydration-distillation method to remove water and solid particles from industrial oils. These oil pressure filtration systems are excellent purification solutions for high-viscosity oils and poor water-shedding oils. The vacuum dehydration-distillation method systems are continuous duty, offline (kidney loop) oil purification systems for industrial oil reservoirs used in paper mills, steel mills, mining, refineries, and power generation.
Keep Industrial Oils Free From Water and Particulate
Vacuum dehydration oil conditioning systems keep industrial oils free of water and particulate contamination to achieve long-term, predictable, and profitable performance. Kaydon Filtration’s distillation technology principle is to separate water from industrial oil by removing it in the form of water vapour rather than in the liquid state. In this way, water can be removed from industrial oil without regard to the degree of emulsification. This technology allows for water removal in a number of liquids and applications that cannot be addressed through coalescing.
Separator Spares & Equipment provides a true vacuum distillation system (not mass transfer) capable of removing water and particulate from higher-viscosity, surfactant-laden lubricating oils. Systems with water removal capabilities to below 70 PPM total water are sized to suit any oil reservoir. They are fully automated, self-contained systems ranging from 5 GPM to 30 GPM.
Kaydon Filtration’s main types of Vacuum Dehydration Oil Conditioning Systems:
Kaydon 858-600, 858-1200, 858-1800 removes water and particulate contamination from lube, hydraulic, and transformer oils.
Kaydon 858-300 MINI-VAC removes water and particulate contamination from lube and hydraulic oils.
Kaydon 858-300-HIVAC removes water, particulates, and gases from transformer oils and sour seal oils.

What is a varnish removal system for turbine lube?
Varnish is the hidden enemy of turbine oil lube systems. A continuously functioning varnish removal system must dislodge varnish build-up and block future attacks. A varnish removal system provides varnish stripping to the extent that varnish-related issues, such as sticking valves, oil flow restrictions, reduction in heat exchanger efficiency, accelerated rotating component wear, and oil degradation, will no longer be detrimental to the turbine lubrication system.
Power generation equipment and hydraulic systems have seen an increase in varnish-related issues due to higher operating temperatures, smaller reservoirs, and the creation of electrostatic discharge. Successful removal and elimination of varnish in the turbine lubricant oil is essential to operating efficient, cost-effective systems.
The Kaydon KPV-10 Varnish Removal System for turbine lubrication is pictured on the right. Operating at a maximum flow rate of 10 GPM, the Kaydon KPV-10 varnish removal system can clean out a turbine lube oil system with a pre-existing varnish problem or be installed in new installations where the varnish problem can be blocked. The system is a simple installation with easy-to-understand and easy-to-operate controls. The filtration of the varnish producing sub-micron solid particles is made possible by the Kaydon Filtration technology K1100 prefilter and Kaydon K4100 polishing element.
Varnish Free Lube System
Separator Spares & Equipment supplies varnish removal systems that provide efficient sub-micron filtration of varnish-forming components. These systems can be installed in new installations to clean out a turbine lube oil system with a pre-existing varnish problem or to prevent varnish from starting.
