Centrifugal Oil Cleaner: Experience Superior #1 Bypass Filtration!

Centrifugal Oil Cleaners

What is a centrifugal oil cleaner?

What-is-centrifugal-oil-cleanerCentrifugal oil cleaners provide superior bypass filtration that removes solid contaminants from the engine’s lubricating oil using centrifugal force (g-force). The centrifugal force enables efficient separation of solid particles, which are only a few microns in size. They can be easily fitted on the engine’s side cover near the front-end box. A centrifugal oil cleaner can extend lube oil change intervals. The centrifugal oil cleaner uses a paper insert to collect soot particles and other solid contaminants. The paper insert makes it easier to clean the centrifuge bowl (rotor) periodically.

During normal engine operations, the lubricating oil will gradually be contaminated by small abrasive particles from the combustion. Engines operating on heavy fuel oil (HFO) will generally increase the contamination due to the increased content of carbon residues and other contaminants. The moving parts in the engine are protected by the built-on duplex full-flow lubricating oil filter. The pressure drop across the replaceable paper filter cartridges is one parameter indicating the contamination level. The higher the dirt and soot content in the lube oil, the shorter the periods between filter cartridge replacement and cleaning.

How does a centrifugal oil cleaner work?

How-does-centrifugal-oil-cleaner-workA centrifugal oil cleaner uses centrifugal force (g-force) to separate solid contaminants from lube oil. It is a pressure-driven centrifuge (also called a pressure-powered centrifuge). The contaminated oil is introduced into the centrifuge bowl through the oil inlet. The oil centrifuge bowl (rotor) rotates rapidly, creating a high g-force within the rotating centrifuge bowl. The centrifugal force causes solid contaminants suspended in the lube oil to move toward the centrifuge bowl wall. The resulting gravitational force draws any solid particles outwards while the purified oil passes back into your sump.

The oil centrifuge bowl wall is lined with a paper insert to collect soot, dirt, metal particles, sludge, and other solid contaminant particles. Due to the g-force, these solid contaminants stick to the paper insert (paper liner) while the cleaner oil flows toward the centrifuge bowl center. The clean oil is discharged from the oil centrifuge bowl (rotor) through bowl nozzles. The clean oil gravity drains back into the oil sump. Over time, the accumulated contaminants removed and captured from the lube oil must be periodically cleaned from the oil centrifuge bowl to maintain the separation efficiency.

MAN Energy Solutions | MAN Diesel & Turbo | MAN B&W Diesel

MAN-Diesel-TurboFor engines exclusively operating on marine diesel oil (MDO) or marine gas oil (MGO), MAN Diesel & Turbo recommends installing a built-on centrifugal oil cleaner as an additional filter to the built-on full-flow depth filter. MAN’s engines running on heavy fuel oil (HFO) are delivered with centrifugal oil cleaners as a standard option. A centrifugal oil cleaner supplements the main oil filter and can be used as a lubricating oil system condition indicator.

All engines require effective and efficient lubricating oil cleaning. A one-system solution approach is not enough. Continuous lube oil cleaning during engine operation is mandatory. It is recommended to use a centrifugal oil cleaner and a built-on full-flow filter. This ensures reliable working conditions, reduces engine wear rates, and extends the engine’s life.

When selecting a centrifugal oil cleaner from MAN Energy Solutions, request the IOW Group centrifugal oil cleaner!

How does the IOW Group centrifugal oil cleaner differ from other centrifugal oil cleaner brands?

IOW-Group-Centrifugal-Oil-CleanerThe simple answer to why the IOW Group centrifugal oil cleaners are the best on the market is better technology. They are the only pressure-driven (pressure-powered) centrifuges to utilize bowl disc technology, remote monitoring, a fully sealed centrifuge bowl, and a distributor impeller.

Features and Advantages

Bowl Disc Technology: Bowl disc technology increases centrifugal separation efficiency by providing more surface area for the separation of contaminants from the lube oil.

Fully Sealed Centrifuge Bowl: A fully sealed centrifuge bowl reduces the risk of cross-contamination between clean and dirty oil.

Remote Monitoring: The CentriClean remote monitor provides operators and systems valuable insight into the high speeds of the centrifuge bowl, cleaning, and service requirements.

Distributor Impeller: At the oil inlet into the centrifuge bowl, the distributor impeller eliminates back pressure by drawing in contaminated oil. Oil enters into the centrifuge bowl at the base of the unit, and once spinning, it is drawn into the centrifuge by the distributor impeller, reducing the risk of back pressure, causing cross-contamination, and aiding in increasing the centrifuge bowl (rotor) speeds.

Better Technology = Higher Centrifugal Force = Greater Separation Efficiency!
