Black Diesel Centrifuge

Waste Oil Centrifuge

What is a black diesel centrifuge?

black-diesel-centrifugeA black diesel centrifuge (or waste oil centrifuge) is a centrifugal device designed to separate water, impurities, and contaminants from waste motor oil (WMO), transmission fluid, crankcase oil, power steering fluid, brake fluid, engine oil, gear oil, compressor oil, and other used mineral oils. The black diesel centrifuge uses centrifugal force (g-force) to separate the liquids and solids into phases. When blended with diesel fuel, the resulting product is an alternative fuel called black diesel.

Adding waste motor oil (WMO) to diesel fuel used to be a common practice. However, the final product almost certainly results in a blend that does not meet diesel fuel specifications. One or more of these properties may be too high: boiling point, sulfur content, ash, water and sediment, viscosity, and carbon residue. A diesel fuel/used oil (waste motor oil) blend may not be sold as diesel fuel.

Because waste oil has different collection origins and compositions, the water, oil, and solids content can vary considerably. There are several different waste oil centrifuge options based on the allowable budget for the black diesel centrifuge, the required flow rate of black diesel to be processed, and separation duty requirements.

Types of Separation Duties

Separation Duties: Clarification vs. Purification

Solid-liquid Separation

A clarifier (clarification) is a centrifugal separator for solid-liquid separation. A clarification centrifuge removes solids such as ash, soot, particles, sediments, natural organic material, and color from the waste oil. A clarifier black diesel centrifuge will remove the solid contamination from the waste oil.

Separating solids from a liquid phase

The most economically cost-effective black diesel centrifuge is a clarifier centrifuge.

Liquid-Liquid-Solid Separation

A purifier (purification) is a centrifugal separator for liquid-liquid-solid separation. A purification centrifuge separates two (2) liquids of different densities, and solids from each other. A purifier black diesel centrifuge will remove the solid contamination and separate the waste oil and free water into phases.

Understanding Centrifugal Force

bowl-disc-technologyIn the rapidly rotating centrifuge bowl of the black diesel centrifuge, the force of gravity is replaced by centrifugal force (g-force), which can be thousands of times greater than gravity. The centrifugal force inside the black diesel centrifuge bowl can achieve in a few seconds, what takes many hours in a settling tank under the influence of gravity.

Bowl Disc dramatically speeds up the separation efficiency!

To increase separation efficiency, bowl discs (conical plates) are stacked, one on top of the other, inside the centrifuge bowl. The stack of bowl discs (disc stack) provides more separation surface area. The bowl disc stacks dramatically speed up the separation of the solids from the liquid.

The solids that collect on the centrifuge bowl wall are removed either by hand or intermittently, depending on the type of black diesel centrifuge utilized.

It is critical to remove the impurities from the black diesel before using your black diesel fuel in your diesel engines.

Black Diesel Centrifuge (Solid-Liquid Separation)

black-diesel-centrifugeIOW-Group-Oil-CentrifugeIOW Group is a leading manufacturer of oil centrifuges. The IOW Group oil centrifuges are designed as a clarifier to separate solids from waste motor oil. The company is known for its high-quality products and innovative designs. Unlike the Alfa Laval and GEA Westfalia industrial centrifuges, the IOW oil centrifuges are pressure-powered (external pump pressure driven).

The IOW Group oil centrifuges are the best centrifugal oil filters on the market. The IOW waste oil centrifuges are designed with bowl disc technology. Unlike conventional oil centrifuge filters, IOW Group oil centrifuge filters use bowl discs to increase the separation efficiency, dramatically reducing the time that contaminants can stay in the oil. This provides more separation surface area. Bowl disc dramatically speeds up the precipitation of the solids from the liquid.

IOW Group oil centrifuges have dirt/sludge monitoring technology, which informs the operator when the centrifuge needs servicing, saving valuable personnel time on otherwise unnecessary cleaning. The CentriClean remote monitor is Modbus or Bluetooth compatible and can be easily connected to your existing alarm systems.

IOW Group oil centrifuges provide high-efficiency filtration and superior contamination control. To learn more about the best oil centrifuge filter for kidney loop systems, visit our IOW Group Oil Centrifuge webpage or IOWGroup.com

Alfa-Laval-MOPX-310-SeparatorThe waste motor oil (WMO), transmission fluid, crankcase oil, power steering fluid, brake fluid, waste vegetable oil, engine oil, gear oil, compressor oil, and other used mineral oils are often contaminated with sludge and water from their prior applications or collection processes.  A purifier will separate two (2) liquids of different densities, and solids from each other. A purifier black diesel centrifuge will remove the solid contamination and separate the waste oil and free water into phases.
