Rivertrace SMART Bilge Monitor 15PPM Bilge Alarm
The Rivertrace SMART BILGE 15ppm Oil Content Monitor with 15PPM bilge alarm was developed in 2005 for real-time oil analysis to meet and exceed the requirements of MEPC.107(49).
The Rivertrace SMART BILGE 15PPM monitor and alarm is made up of 2 key components:
- the Rivertrace SMART BILGE ‘Module’
- the Rivertrace SMART ‘CELL’ measuring cell
Developed by Rivertrace, the SMART CELL utilises a unique Detector Array Technology. This enables the OCM to run real-time oil analysis of all three oil types (HFO, Diesel, and Emulsions) simultaneously without the need for recalibration.
This innovative design allows for simple routine maintenance of the OCM while maintaining optimal operating conditions.
The Rivertrace SMART CELL utilises a unique Detector Array Technology developed by Rivertrace, allowing the OCM to analyse all three oil types (HFO, Diesel, and Emulsions) simultaneously without recalibration. This innovative design allows for simple routine maintenance of the OCM while maintaining optimal conditions.
Optical cell fouling is recognised as a leading cause of monitor malfunction or incorrect reading. A manual cell-cleaning device is included as standard to enable routine maintenance.

Rivertrace SMART ESM (Exhaust Scrubber Washwater Monitor)
In January 2020, the IMO 2020 global sulphur cap came into force to improve air quality, preserve the environment, and protect human health. To comply with this sulphur reduction, a popular solution is to install an exhaust gas cleaning system (EGCS).
For this, wet scrubber systems use wash water to remove the pollutants from the exhaust gas. Therefore, the wash water being discharged must be monitored at all times to ensure it is within the limits set by the regulating body. There are IMO regulations for water quality parameters, including Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), pH, and turbidity prior to discharge into the ocean.
With over 35 years of experience designing equipment for the marine environment, Rivertrace has developed our SMART ESM. The Rivertrace SMART ESM is designed to MEPC.259(68) and MEPC.340(77) and is suitable for both the inlet and outlet of an EGCS, measuring and recording the required parameters of PAH, Turbidity, Temperature, and pH. The monitor can be installed on new builds and retrofit systems and accommodates open-loop, closed-loop, and hybrid scrubber systems.
The innovative measuring cell design enables a unique plug-and-play maintenance approach. Each measurement parameter is enclosed in a separate cassette, which is slotted into the measuring cell around the sample tube. This allows the calibrated parts to be swapped without the need to isolate the sample, which flows through a glass tube in the centre of the cell.
Rivertrace SMART ODME (Oil Discharge Monitoring Equipment)
The Rivertrace Oil Discharge Monitoring Equipment (SMART ODME) has been designed to provide a means of monitoring, recording, and controlling the ballast discharge for crude oil, product, and chemical tankers, including ICE class vessels. This system is modular in construction and does not require the usual pump/motor bulkhead penetration as used on older systems. The Rivertrace SMART ODME includes all components required to meet MEPC 108(49) and the latest MEPC 240(65) for Bio Fuels, effective 1 January 2016.
The Rivertrace SMART ODME incorporates a ‘simulation mode’ to aid system demonstration to PSC surveyors, and is designed for ease of retrofitting, operation, installation, and maintenance.
Discharge limits are set at 30 litres of Oil per nautical mile or 1/30,000 of the previous cargo for slop and wash water discharges.

Rivertrace SMARTSAFE ORB Bilge Overboard Security System (Oil Record Book)
The Rivertrace SMARTSAFE ORB Bilge Overboard Security System was developed to prevent the vessel from illegal discharge “Magic Pipes” and minimise discrepancies in the oil record book.
In its simplest form, the Rivertrace SMARTSAFE ORB (oil record book) will utilise the ship’s GPS and record each ‘event’ of the bilge water discharge process. The control module will store these events for a period of three years, exceeding MEPC requirements.
It is a complete, interlocked system that ensures the security of your discharges. This includes tamper-proof electronic flow meters and a secondary diverter valve with position feedback installed after the standard IMO diverter valve. The secondary diverter valve is controlled solely by the Rivertrace SMARTSAFE ORB and will immediately be closed should a malfunction or malicious act be detected.
Rivertrace’s SMARTSAFE ORB can provide electronic recording of the discharges. When connected to the ship’s LAN system, the monitor will send automated emails at set intervals. The data is then interpreted, recorded in the Rivertrace Connected database, and displayed on the user-friendly dashboard interface. All data, including the email report, can be accessed through the dashboard, providing the user with a full auditable trail of the discharges. The discharge data can also be used as an automated entry into your electronic ORB.
Rivertrace SMART PFM 107 Oil-in-Water Monitor
The Rivertrace SMART PFM 107 oil-in-water monitor measures particulates in the sample stream on a continuous basis by passing the process fluid through a proprietary photo-optical measuring cell developed by Rivertrace.
Using a combination of optical recognition algorithms and light intensity, it is possible to differentiate between Oil particles, Gas/Air Bubbles, and Solid particulates in the range 1-500 microns. Flow and particulate characteristics can be visualised live via the 7” display.
Oil concentration, pressure, temperature, and oil alarm status are displayed on an HD touchscreen. Oil concentrations, alarms, and fault logs are stored within the system to comply with the reporting requirements of IMO resolution MEPC.107(49) and can be downloaded to a PC via LAN or USB for further analysis.
The Rivertace SMART PFM 107 offers a choice of auto cleaning methods to ensure accuracy is maintained at all times. The cleaning is fully automatic and operates whenever it senses contamination of the optical windows.
The Rivertrace SMART PFM 107 is designed for drill rig slop tanks, oily water separator discharge, regulatory compliance, and/or produce water discharge applications.
Brief History of Rivertrace
1983 Rivertrace Engineering (RTE) was founded by Bob Coomber.
1989 Rivertrace expands into the offshore industry, producing custom oil-in-water analysers and becoming a leading supplier to North Sea oilfield operators.
2000 The Rivertrace OCD CM was introduced to replace the OCD1M and OCD2M in response to the introduction of IMO resolution MEPC 60(33).
2004 The Rivertrace SMART BILGE monitor was launched to replace the OCD CM to comply with the new IMO resolution MEPC 107(49).
2005 The new Rivertrace SMART ODME design was introduced as a result of the changes in IMO regulations and the introduction of MEPC 108(49).
2006 The Rivertrace Smartsafe Bilge Overboard Security System was developed in response to our customers’ worldwide requests and requirements for additional security from the industry issues of Magic Pipes.
2014 The Rivertrace SMARTSAFE ORB was launched to replace the Smartsafe. This system records the oily water discharge process of any Oil Water Separator (IMO – MEPC 60.33 or 107.49), thus avoiding the common mistakes of manual entries and log variations in the oil record book.
2015 Separator Spares & Equipment, LLC is an approved Rivertrace verification center, trained to install, verify, operate, troubleshoot, commission, and maintain SMART Bilge and OCD CM Bilge Monitors.
2016 Rivertrace was restructured and rebranded from Rivertrace Engineering Limited (RTE) to Rivertrace Limited.
2022 Separator Spares & Equipment, LLC has completed Rivertrace’s SMART ODME and SMART Bilge training and is now an Authorized Rivertrace SMART Bilge and SMART ODME Service Center.
