Cat Fine Master

Machine Application
GEA Westfalia centrifugal separators specialize in purifying fuel and lube oil, treating sludge, and effectively removing cat fines. With their high g-force, the GEA Westfalia CAT Fine Master separators reliably guarantee the high performance and economical operation of ship engines and boost their service life even under extreme conditions.
Cat fines, which are fine-grained, hard, brittle, and highly abrasive catalyst residues in fuels, can cause considerable damage to marine or power generation engines. Under extreme conditions, they can even lead to the total failure of the main engine. The GEA Cat Fine Master is an effective countermeasure for increased engine protection.
The GEA Cat Fine Master consists of a heavy fuel oil separator as the core and a feed pump. This pump can be controlled during operation to guarantee an optimally adjusted heavy fuel oil flow, considering the corresponding process requirements. This ensures an additional increase in separation efficiency and also leads to energy savings. The system is completed by the GEA IO control system and optional measurement and analysis equipment.

Where high cat fine levels are an issue, the GEA Westfalia CatFineMasters’ robust design allows GEA to increase the separation temperature to 110° C (230° F). This reduces viscosity and significantly increases separation efficiency. By increasing the separation temperature, the modular technology option increases viscosity and reduces abrasion caused by cat fines, protecting the main engine and other key components. GEA Westfalia Separator is the only manufacturer on the market to offer this technology.

What are Catalytic Fines?
Cat fines are small metal particles deliberately introduced to ‘crack’ fuel to improve refining efficiency. Unless removed by the fuel oil purifiers (purification), the cat fines become embedded in engine parts and cause severe and rapid engine damage. A combination of factors causes the current problems. Since the exact cat fine concentration in the fuel oil is, in most cases, unknown, the ships’ crews often have no idea how clean the fuel is.
Cat fines remain the biggest threat to your engine, even when using new fuel oil.
Effective filtration, purification, and fuel management are required. There is also an increasing requirement for ships to use low-sulfur fuels, and as these require more refining, the level of cat fines will increase. Low-sulfur fuels are less lubricating, and this, combined with the introduction of increased amounts of abrasive materials, causes damage. If the cat fines are not treated in such a way, they might cause severe damage to the engine.
Solutions and preventative measures can help minimize the risk of problems. The GEA Westfalia Cat Fine Master makes removing cat fines from fuel oil easy.
