Alfa Laval Titanium Plate Pack Cleaning
The Alfa Laval freshwater generator titanium plate corrugated design provides superior surface area and compactness for maximum heat transfer rates. This plate technology results in a higher temperature drop across the titanium plates, leading to other issues that need to be addressed at regular intervals. For example, the natural scaling process or other deposits on the titanium plates that reduce heat transfer efficiency could occur over time if left untreated. As scaling builds up over time and in severity, it could ultimately lead to plate damage and cause the equipment to fail. Regularly monitoring and cleaning the Alfa Laval titanium plate pack will keep them running efficiently for a more extended time.

How does a single-stage freshwater generator work?
The freshwater generator works on the well-known vacuum distillation principle. Waste heat from the main engine on board is utilized as the heating medium for evaporation. The evaporation occurs in the evaporation plate pack (plate bundle) located in the lower part of the housing. A portion of the incoming seawater evaporates due to the high vacuum inside the housing. The generated vapor is cleaned from seawater droplets while flowing through a wire mesh demister.
The condensation takes place in the condenser plate pack (plate bundle) located in the upper part of the housing. The condenser is cooled by seawater (condenser cooling water). The latent heat from condensation is transferred to the seawater. The condensation/evaporation temperature varies with the seawater cooling water temperature.
A small portion of the heated seawater is utilized as feedwater for the evaporator bundle. The biggest part is used as a driving medium for the combined brine/air ejector. This ejector has two functions: (1) extraction of the surplus seawater (brine) out of the housing and (2) vacuum creation by the exhaust of the non-condensable gases. The distillate quality (salinity) is monitored in the control panel. If the salinity exceeds the adjusted setpoint, the distillate is rejected back to the evaporator via a solenoid valve.
The most common heat source for freshwater generators is the waste heat of the main engine jacket cooling water. The capacity range is dependent on the heating medium and cooling water temperatures. For a single-stage Alfa Laval JWP fresh water generator, the heat required to produce one (1) liter of fresh water is 620-720 kcal (2.6-3.0 MJ). For a two-stage Alfa Laval JWP fresh water generator, you will need 350 kcal (1.5 MJ) to produce one (1) liter of fresh water. Other sources may be utilized as the main source or auxiliary.
