Varnish Removal System: The Guide to Turbine Oil Filtration

Varnish contamination is one of the leading causes of unplanned downtime in lubrication systems and hydraulic systems. Over time, oil degradation and particle contamination lead to sticky deposits that restrict flow, stick valves, and damage critical system components. Separator Spares & Equipment supplies advanced varnish removal systems (also called varnish removal units) that deliver efficient removal of harmful byproducts, extending equipment life and reducing maintenance costs.

Why Varnish Formation Is a Serious Threat

When lubricating oils and hydraulic oils are exposed to high heat, oxidation, and other stressors, they break down, producing oil degradation products that form varnish. Left unchecked, oil breakdown accelerates wear, increases operating temperatures, and leads to costly repairs or system failures in turbine lube and other mission-critical systems.

The oil fluid temperature has a significant impact on almost any given solubility. The “varnish generating spots” are usually “hot spots,” while the “varnish deposit spots” are usually “cold spots.” Varnish can be dissolved, insoluble, or cured, and its state is very dependent on the temperature and contact with air:

    1. Varnish is dissolved in its base fluid (for example, mineral base oil).
    2. Varnish will precipitate out immediately when it becomes insoluble (the portion above the saturation point at a given temperature).
    3. Varnish is cured and no longer soluble with its base fluid when in contact with air/oxygen or ‘baked’ on hot surfaces (example, lacquer on cylinder liners in diesel engines).

How Our Varnish Removal Unit Works

The technology behind a varnish removal unit is specifically designed for removing varnish and oil degradation by-products without stripping the oil’s additive package. Using advanced filter elements, these varnish removal systems target insoluble varnish particles and dissolved contaminants, ensuring a cleaner oil environment. This makes them ideal for critical applications such as hydraulic systems and turbine lube systems, where even minor varnish contamination can cause performance loss or system failure.

Varnish removal systems provide continuous kidney-loop filtration and circulation of the turbine oil in the reservoir. Industrial oil filtration varnish removal systems enable you to effectively maintain very low varnish content in your turbine lube oil, as measured by MPC (Membrane Patch Colimetry).

Routine testing of oil samples helps determine the varnish level and overall health of the oil, allowing maintenance teams to schedule corrective actions before issues escalate. Whether used for hydraulic oils in industrial equipment or turbine lube in power generation, a varnish removal unit provides an effective solution for extending oil life and reducing unplanned maintenance. By continuously removing oil degradation products, these systems ensure reliable operation, improved efficiency, and longer life for both the lubricant and the system components they protect.
