Scienco/FAST InTank FITT Ballast Water Treatment System Award

1st SciencoFAST InTank FITT BWTS Award
Houma, LA – May 6, 2026 – Separator Spares & Equipment, LLC recognized for selling the first Scienco/FAST InTank FITT Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS).
This recognition marks a significant industry milestone, highlighting Separator Spares & Equipment, LLC as the first company to commercially sell and deploy the Scienco/FAST InTank FITT BWTS. The award underscores the company’s role in advancing in-tank ballast water treatment technology, offering a practical alternative to traditional inline systems while reducing retrofit complexity for vessel operators.
Separator Spares & Equipment, LLC supplied multiple Scienco/FAST InTank FITT BWTS units for U.S.-flagged, Jones Act-compliant multi-purpose support vessels (MPSVs) and research/survey vessels. The company managed the project from initial consultation through system specification and final delivery, coordinating closely with engineering teams, operations personnel, and the vessel owner to ensure alignment with performance requirements and installation constraints.
“This milestone reflects our commitment to bringing practical, forward-thinking solutions to the maritime industry,” said Shane Stewart, Operations Director of Separator Spares & Equipment, LLC. “We see significant opportunity for this technology across multiple vessel segments.”
“As regulatory requirements continue to evolve, solutions like the InTank FITT BWTS will play an important role,” said Rudolf Mes, Senior Vice President, Ballast Water Division, Scienco/FAST InTank. “This project demonstrates a viable path forward for operators seeking efficient compliance options.”
This milestone signals a broader shift in ballast water treatment strategies, demonstrating that in-tank solutions can provide a viable alternative to traditional inline systems. As adoption increases, this approach has the potential to redefine how vessel operators address compliance and system integration challenges across the industry.
About Scienco/FAST InTank BWTS, a subsidiary of BioMicrobics, Inc
Internationally recognized for engineering quality and dependable field service, Scienco/FAST is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) focused on advanced sewage and water treatment systems for the maritime sector. In 2021, the company expanded its proven portfolio by adding the InTank Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) following its acquisition from Envirocleanse. In 2019, Envirocleanse’s InTank ballast water treatment system became the 15th ballast water management system (BWMS) to be granted US Coast Guard type‐approval, making it the first system that treats ballast water during the voyage to be type‐approved.
Scienco/FAST InTank FITT Ballast Water Treatment System
The Scienco/FAST InTank FITT BWTS is a filterless system that uses the bulk chemical (BCV) version of InTank, dosing active substance and neutralizer from tanks on board the vessel. Specifically designed to meet the requirements of smaller commercial vessels, Scienco/FAST InTank FITT brings all of the operational and compliance benefits of Scienco/FAST InTank in a very small footprint.
The Scienco/FAST InTank FITT BWTS treats during voyage and neutralizes before discharge, assuring technical (TRO) compliance. During treatment, InTank FITT checks the TRO level in the ballast tank; if challenging water has used the initial dose, InTank will automatically add more TRO, thus adapting treatment to water quality, and assuring biological compliance. Neutralization is also completed in the ballast tank, and technical compliance (TRO) is recorded before the tank is discharged.
How does a Scienco/FAST InTank FITT Ballast Water Treatment System work?
Despite its 0.5 m² footprint, Scienco/FAST FITT provides the same robust treatment as the full-size Scienco InTank BWTS system. Still, the filterless InTank FITT is an incredibly low-capex option and can be seamlessly installed in the most confined onboard environments. The Scienco/FAST InTank FITT integrates the neutralizer tank onto the InTank FITT skid. The Amperometric TRO sensor provides solid-state TRO monitoring, contributing to the small footprint. Injection pumps, an injection quill, and a circulation spool are mounted on the skid. The compact control panel is also mounted on the skid, with remote options available.
The Scienco InTank BWTS is engineered to treat ballast water during normal vessel operations, eliminating the need for sea or complete exchange while supporting efficient ballast operations and port operations through a compact, small pump room footprint, an integrated dosing module, and a proven record of technical compliance in ballast water management.
What is the difference between an In-Tank vs. an In-Line Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS)?
| Typical In-Line BWTS | Scienco InTank BWTS |
| Treatment system size MUST = ballasting rate | System size is flexible with voyage duration/ballast volume |
| Treats in port - during busy crew time and important cargo activities | Treats at sea during voyage; much easier on crew and vessel operations |
| Filters | No filters |
| Treats slowly in fresher water (EC systems) or low UVT water (UV systems), or other challenging ballast waters | Ballast water quality - salinity, turbidity, or other water qualities do not change ballasting/vessel operations |
| Cannot serve isolated topside tanks or gravity ballasting/deballasting | Topside tanks, gravity ballasting/deballasting are fine |
| Hold times (examples, Techcross (minimum 5-day, 120 hours), Alfa Laval (72 hours USCG) | Treatment time minimum 36-46 hours, depending on vessel and equipment size |
| High power demand in port, particularly with poor water quality, increasing peak power demand of vessel | EC Cell operating at sea. Always uses clean salt water from sea, always operating most efficiently with a long service life |
| Large installation on ballast piping/in pump rooms/machinery space, particularly filters | Less hardware, smaller hardware - distributed |
| Hardware failure = delay in vessel in port | Hardware failure can be fixed at sea no delay to vessel. In not immediately repaired, ballast exchanger at sea, no change to port operations |
| Oxidizing Systems - Neutralization MUST occur during discharge. Any failure = a violation recorded by the system | Neutralization happens in the ballast tank. Treatment and neutralization confirmed BEFORE discharge - Technical Compliance guaranteed |
| Oxidizing Systems - Ballast in the tank for weeks is only treated once - regrowth, particularly bacteria will occur | The Scienco InTank allows treatment to fit vessel schedule, puts the crew in control of biological compliance. |
| All ballast into ballast tanks must be treated. Cannot serve semi-submersible in place flood and discharge operations | In place flood and discharge operations can be completed without treatment |
Scienco InTank allows a vessel to ballast normally, with no filters, no concern about ballast water salinity, turbidity, temperature, etc., avoiding costly delays due to ballast water treatment and ballast water compliance issues. Treating at sea allows ballast water treatment system issues to be fixed at sea and technical compliance to be recorded before discharge. Scienco/FAST InTank allows the most confidence in compliance with the least impact to operations.
