Schmidt Bretten Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers

In the Schmidt gasketed plate heat exchanger, the corrugated plates are fitted with gaskets that seal the channels and direct the fluids into alternate channels. The plate pack is assembled between a frame plate and a movable pressure plate and compressed by tightening bolts fitted between these different plates. The corrugated plates stacked and the movable pressure plate are suspended from an upper carrying bar and located by a lower guiding bar, both of which are fixed to the support column.

The physical design of the Schmidt gasketed plate heat exchanger allows easy cleaning (in-line cleaning) and capacity modification by adding or removing corrugated plates. Gasketed plate heat exchangers can have a large amount of effective heat transfer surface in a small footprint. The corrugation pattern pressed onto each plate produces the highest overall heat transfer rate by assuring turbulent flow and excellent fluid distribution across the entire plate surface. Plate heat exchangers are known for high heat transfer coefficients. As a result, they are  compact and lightweight compared to conventional shell and tube heat exchangers.

The standard gasket materials are nitrile rubber (general purpose, oil resistant), EPDM rubber (general purpose, elevated temperatures), chloroprene rubber, or another exotic material. The plate material can be AISI 304 stainless steel, AISI 316L stainless steel, AISI 316TI stainless steel, titanium, or another exotic material. The materials of the plates and gaskets are determined based on the application heating and cooling demands and the installation environment.
