In this article, we will discover how the Alfa Laval centrifuge works.
The Alfa Laval MAB centrifuge is a centrifugal separator designed for the removal of impurities from mineral oils. The Alfa Laval solid bowl centrifuge is a manual clean separator. Therefore, the centrifuge must be stopped at regular intervals and manually open the Alfa Laval MAB solids retaining bowl to remove the sediment. The feed pump of all Alfa Laval MAB separators is of the gear type. The gear pump is direct-driven by the worm wheel shaft.
Alfa Laval MAB Centrifuge
Alfa Laval MAB centrifuge is a crucial part of many industrial processes. It is known for its high performance and reliability. If you’re not sure what it is, or how it works, then read on for more information. We’ll cover the basics of what the Alfa Laval solid bowl centrifuges are used for and explain how the Alfa Laval MAB Centrifuge fits into things.
The Alfa Laval MAB centrifuges are designed to clean lubricating oils, hydraulic oils, gear oils, quench oils, compressor oils, factory oils, marine diesel oils, and low viscosity fuel oils by clarification or clarification purification.

Working Principles of the Alfa Laval MAB Centrifuge
What is clarification?
Clarification is liquids/solids separation to separate particles, typically solids, from a liquid having a lower density than the particles.
An Alfa Laval MAB clarifier bowl will have one outlet. The clarified liquid (oil) moves towards the bowl center and discharges through the outlet. The solids move towards the bowl periphery and settle on the Alfa Laval centrifuge bowl wall.
What is purification?
Purification is liquid/liquid/solids separation with the intention of separating two intermixed and mutually insoluble liquid phases with different densities, the heavy liquid phase constituting the major part of the mixture. Solids having a higher density than liquids can be separated out simultaneously.
An Alfa Laval MAB purifier bowl will have two outlets. The purified oil leaves the separator through the oil outlet, and the water is separated out through the water outlet. The solids move towards the bowl periphery and settle on the Alfa Laval MAB centrifuge bowl wall.
Alfa Laval MAB purifiers can remove particles of various sizes, from very large ones to extremely small ones, such as water droplets in fuel oils.
Centrifugal Separation vs. Gravity Separation
Centrifugal Separation
In a speedily rotating vessel, the gravity is replaced by the centrifugal force, which can be thousands of times greater. The sedimentation and separation process is continuous and very fast. When liquid/solid particles in a liquid mixture are subjected to the centrifugal force in a separator bowl, it takes only a few seconds to achieve what takes many hours in a tank under the influence of gravity.
Gravity Separation
A turbid liquid in a stationary vessel will clear slowly as the heavy particles in the liquid mixture sink to the bottom under the influence of gravity. The lighter liquid phase will rise while the heavier phase sinks.
Factors Influencing Separation:
-
- Viscosity: Low viscosity facilitates separation. The viscosity can be reduced by heating.
- Density Difference (Specific Gravity Ratio): The greater the density difference between the phase of the process liquids, the easier the separation process. The difference can be increased by raising the separating temperature.
- Separating Temperature: The temperature should be uniform throughout the separation process.
- Position of Interface: The interface between the liquid seal and the oil should be positioned as close as possible to the bowl periphery. The interface must not be located so far from the bowl center that the oil will pass the outer edge of the top disc, breaking the liquid seal and discharging with water—factors influencing the position of the interface: Oil Density, Size of Throughput, and Gravity Disc.
- Throughput: Bad separating results may be due to excessive throughput. Ensuring the separator is not processing more product than the maximum throughput capacity is crucial.
